In Shell Shock!, an expedition crew led by Nurse Joy owned two Growlithe. In Pikachu Re-Volts, Cassidy and Butch controlled a Growlithe at Mandarin Island North. In Showdown at the Po-ké Corral, multiple Growlithe were living at Professor Oak's Laboratory. In Pikachu's Vacation, a Growlithe was at the Pokémon Theme Park. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Trainer's Growlithe was defeated by Mewtwo while it was serving Giovanni. Growlithe debuted in Sparks Fly for Magnemite, where it was seen in Gringey City's Pokémon Center. In Cilan and the Case of the Purrloin Witness!, Tedesco's Growlithe helped defend Ash and his friends when Teaque's Vanillite's attacked them. Drew and May attempted to catch the Arcanine, but after finding the Growlithe litter, they decided to leave it alone. In On Cloud Arcanine, an Arcanine was taking care of a whole litter of Growlithe. During his battle against Ash, Morrison's reluctance to fight his friend led Growlithe to be defeated by Corphish. In Saved by the Beldum, Morrison used a Growlithe in his Ever Grande Conference battle against Gavin, where it was defeated by Marowak. In The Flame Pokémon-athon!, Lara Laramie's Growlithe battled Ash while defending a Tauros from a ranch that he mistakenly tried to catch. The Officer Jenny of Fula City also has a Growlithe, as seen in The Power of Us, which is set in a timeline different from the main series. Growlithe have been frequently used as police dogs by Officer Jenny prior to Pokémon the Series: Black & White. However, he left it behind when he ran away from home. James had a pet Growlithe nicknamed Growlie, which he owned as a child. Hisuian Growlithe in the anime Major appearances Growlie (For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.) Hisuian Growlithe evolves into Hisuian Arcanine. Hisuian Growlithe take much longer to bond with humans because they have lived apart from humans for a long time. Hisuian Growlithe live in pairs, and are known to be vigilant when guarding their territory. Although Hisuian Growlithe's horn is made of rock, it is fragile and breaks easily, so the Pokémon rarely uses its horn unless needed. Hisuian Growlithe's soft and insulated fur allows it to survive the cold weather of Hisui. Growlithe's Hisuian form is the result of it being exposed to volcanic activity within the coastal highlands it lives in during Hisui's early times. It has a small horn made of rock on its head, and its tail is curly. Its ears are round and square with light orange-red interiors. Its mane covers its eyes and extends below its head, ending with three curls. The fur is made out of igneous rock components. In Hisui, Growlithe's fur is dark orange-red, while its mane and tail are light gray, and its muzzle is a light tan. Growlithe has a regional form: Hisuian Growlithe. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Growlithe is known to bark at anyone who approaches it while sleeping. However, strong, unpleasant smells can disable Growlithe's sense of smell for short periods, as seen in the anime. It can smell the emotions of others, and never forgets a scent. If it detects an unknown smell in its territory, it roars to flush out the intruder. Growlithe also has a powerful olfactory sense. In the wild, Growlithe can be commonly found in grassy plains. It has a long history with people, as its bones have been found in Stone Age ruins. Otherwise, this obedient Pokémon will wait motionlessly until given an order. It will fiercely bark at, bite, and chase away any perceived threat. In particular, it has been known to fight with Rockruff over territory. Growlithe is a friendly and loyal Pokémon that will fearlessly defend its Trainer and territory from harm, even against larger, stronger enemies. Its forepaws have two visible claws, while its hind paws have three toes each. It has gray eyes, a black nose, and large, round and triangular ears with beige interiors. Growlithe's coat is noticeably longer on its chest and tail. The fur on its muzzle, chest, belly, and tail is beige, as is an additional tuft of fur on top of its head. It has orange fur with black stripes along its back and legs. Growlithe is a quadrupedal canine Pokémon.
